Restaurant Technology 1

 

Course Description:

This course provides an in-depth introduction to the utilization of contemporary restaurant technologies, primarily focusing on the Toast point-of-sale systems, MarginEdge inventory software, and the 7shifts scheduling and 7 tasks task management software. Designed for restaurant managers, owners, and potential employees aiming to enrich their understanding, the course empowers participants to leverage technology to improve efficiency, reduce waste, enhance customer experience, and ultimately bolster the bottom line.

Prerequisites: None.

Course Duration: 6 weeks (2 hours per week)

Assessment: There will be a review every two weeks, with practical assessments, quizzes, and tests.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the Restaurant Technology 1 Certificate.

Week 1 & 2: Introduction to Toast and MarginEdge Software

  • Understanding the Toast system: Participants will familiarize themselves with the core features of the Toast platform, learning how to navigate its interface, perform setup operations, and grasp its functionalities. The goal is to ensure participants can efficiently operate the system and understand the benefits it offers in a restaurant environment.
  • Basics of transactions: Focus will be on understanding and executing sales, returns, and exchanges on the Toast system. We will cover how to correctly enter transactions, apply discounts, and handle special payment situations, along with generating and interpreting sales reports.
  • Navigating MarginEdge: Participants will explore MarginEdge’s core capabilities, understanding the structure and key functionalities of the platform. The aim is to get a strong grasp of how MarginEdge can improve inventory management.
  • Inventory control with MarginEdge: Detailed sessions on setting up, recording, and updating inventory in MarginEdge. Participants will learn to input new items, manage existing inventory, and interpret inventory reports to help manage stock effectively.
  • Hands-on exercise: Participants will be guided to create a sample inventory in MarginEdge, manage stock levels, and interpret inventory reports.
  • Quiz: The quiz will evaluate the participant’s understanding of the Toast system and MarginEdge, particularly focusing on transaction management and inventory control.
Toast Course

Week 3 & 4: Advanced Toast and MarginEdge Features for Better Restaurant Management

  • In-depth look at Toast: Detailed exploration of advanced features in Toast, including sales tracking and financial performance analysis. Participants will learn to generate, interpret, and apply insights from sales and financial reports to make informed business decisions.
  • Improving the bottom line with MarginEdge: Participants will be taught how to use MarginEdge to reduce waste and optimize food orders. By interpreting historical data and using MarginEdge’s predictive capabilities, they will learn how to anticipate demand and make cost-effective ordering decisions.
  • Hands-on exercise: Participants will practice advanced features in Toast and MarginEdge, with a focus on sales tracking, financial performance analysis, and optimizing food orders based on MarginEdge’s predictive capabilities.
  • Quiz: The quiz will evaluate the participant’s ability to use advanced features in Toast and MarginEdge to make data-driven business decisions.

Week 5: Effective Team and Guest Management with 7shifts

  • Overview of 7shifts: This session will cover the essentials of 7shifts, focusing on features like staff scheduling, shift swapping, and time off requests. The objective is to equip participants with the knowledge to create and manage staff schedules efficiently using the platform.
  • Using 7shifts for improved team dynamics and better guest atmosphere: The participants will learn how to leverage 7shifts’ features to foster positive team dynamics, improve staff satisfaction, and create a better atmosphere for guests. This includes understanding how to balance workloads, manage staff preferences, and ensure smooth shift transitions.
  • Hands-on exercise: Participants will create an efficient staff schedule using 7shifts, considering variables such as staff availability, peak hours, and shift preferences.
  • Quiz: The quiz will test the participant’s ability to utilize 7shifts to create efficient schedules and improve team dynamics.

Week 6: Remote Restaurant Management with 7 tasks

  • Navigating 7 tasks: Participants will learn the functionalities of 7 tasks, including task creation, assignment, and tracking. The aim is to enable participants to effectively delegate tasks and monitor progress remotely.
  • Using 7 tasks for effective remote restaurant responsibilities management: Participants will gain insights into leveraging 7 tasks for remote management of restaurant responsibilities. This includes creating tasks, assigning responsibilities, setting deadlines, tracking progress, and understanding how to handle task-related issues.
  • Final hands-on exercise: Participants will simulate task management for a sample restaurant using 7 tasks, with the aim of effectively delegating and tracking tasks remotely.
  • Final Assessment: The final assessment will evaluate the participants’ overall understanding of the course, their ability to use the software platforms effectively, and their readiness to apply these skills in a real-world restaurant environment.
Course Graduate

Final Certification: Upon completion of the course, participants will be awarded their Restaurant Technology 1 certificate. The course demands active participation, completion of all assignments and quizzes on time, and adherence to ethical guidelines. Resources include access to the software tools (Toast, MarginEdge, 7shifts, and 7 tasks), and additional learning materials will be provided as needed. The instructor will be available for queries and support throughout the course.

Course Policies and Requirements:

  • Regular attendance is mandatory.
  • Participants must complete all assignments and quizzes on time.
  • Participants are expected to engage actively in discussions and hands-on exercises.
  • Any form of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, will not be tolerated.

Course Resources:

Access to the software tools (Toast, MarginEdge, 7shifts, and 7tasks) will be required. The course facilitator will provide additional learning materials and resources as needed.
